The jury is still out on the issue of “Does a Scrum Master need to have technical skills?”, but I’m one of those that believe that they need to. Obviously, that doesn’t mean that the Scrum Master must be a developer and write code just like the other developers in the team, but they do need to understand the practices and - as you mentioned - the vocabulary.

They need to have some basics to start with.

As you put it towards the end of the story, you will be missing some pieces of the puzzle, that’s true. But it’s also important to think about it in another way: “with how many of the pieces of the puzzle do you start with?”

As a Scrum Master, you are better at helping your team if you understand what your team does.
